1. Add your preferred amount of unsalted butter to a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, until the milk solids separate, foam, and just start to turn golden, about 5 to 7 minutes. Keep an eye on it!
  2. Remove from the heat and continue to stir—the residual heat of the pan will deepen the color. When it’s your desired shade of amber, transfer to a heatproof bowl or container to stop the cooking.
