- Add your preferred amount of unsalted butter to a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, until the milk solids separate, foam, and just start to turn golden, about 5 to 7 minutes. Keep an eye on it!
- Remove from the heat and continue to stir—the residual heat of the pan will deepen the color. When it’s your desired shade of amber, transfer to a heatproof bowl or container to stop the cooking.
